From our experience, we’ve learned that Baltimore drivers love SUVs, especially full-size models that come with the option of all-wheel-drive. At Heritage Volkswagen Parkville, we are excited to welcome the new Volkswagen Atlas to our showroom. We are also curious about how it fares against one of its main competitors, the 2020 Toyota Highlander.

Cargo Space

The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2020 Toyota Highlander are big SUVs with a lot of value. Being a three-row SUV means you’ll have to cater to drivers who make space a priority. If you compare the cabin size of both of these SUVs, the 2020 Toyota Highlander falls rather short, offering 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear rows folded flat. The VW Atlas, on the other hand, delivers more for our Baltimore, MD drivers with 97 cubic feet of total cargo space to work with.

Performance

Beyond cargo room, both vehicles offer decent engine power. Yet once again, the VW Atlas boasts far more. Sure, the entry-level engine of the Toyota Highlander is a roaring V6 that outpaces the turbo-4 of the VW Atlas by a margin, the secondary powertrain option is where things fall a little flat for Toyota. Toyota offers a hybrid powertrain in the form of a 2.5-liter inline-4 gas engine and an electric motor, which pumps out 243 horsepower. The second powertrain of the VW Atlas is a booming 276-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine that offers up stellar road performance, especially when tooled with all-wheel drive.
